You’re interested in getting your first pet. While it may seem pretty simple – go to the pet store, pick out your companion, the necessary food and supplies and you’re all set – there really is more to it than meets the eye.
There are some things you need to consider first before you go pet shopping: The What, Why, How and When aspects.
- What kind of pet do you want? You need to determine what kind of animal would work best with your personality and lifestyle.
- Why do you want that specific animal? Is it just physical appeal, or do you have prior experience with the species? Make sure you do your research about the animal of your choice before you buy it and find out about any habits that would be undesirable to you.
- How much money will it cost you? This varies depending on the species, as well as where you buy the pet. In most cases, if it is a specialized breed that you are going for, it is best to find a certified breeder near you. You also have to calculate how much money you would be able to spend on vet bills, medicines and vaccinations, food, water and housing supplies during the duration of the pet’s life.
- When will you have the time to devote to this pet? Even the most basic of pets take time. You have to factor in regular cage cleanings, training and bonding time if you really want a well behaved and happy animal.
Only after you’ve answered these questions should you decide to go forth and pursue getting your companion. Owning a pet is a big commitment to make, and it’s best if you know you are ready beforehand.
