Labrador Retrievers were bred for one purpose and that was to retrieve game in the field and it has been bred this way for hundreds of years. Long ago, many hunters of upland game spent a lot of their time outside looking for game birds. Whenever they found the birds, they’ll shoot the birds down with their guns, and then they’ll send in their dogs, which in this case are Labrador Retrievers to claim the fallen fowl. For many hours and sometimes days, the dogs that accompanied these hunters over large areas of land would search and retrieve birds. To do this work, they needed a dog that was capable of doing a lot of running, swimming, and jumping. This type of work required a dog to be very athletic and full of energy and stamina.
Now, let us look at the world we live in today, where the main job of the Labrador Retriever is to be a household pet, though, there are a few people that still use them for hunting. A majority of Lab owners keep them around as championship dogs. Nevertheless, even though the job of the Labrador Retriever is not as busy as it was before, they’re energy level has stayed the same. Modern Labs are still the same dogs that can run, jump, and swim for hours daily.
I am sure you know that any living creature with a lot of energy needs an outlet. Therefore, if you own a Lab, it is in your best interest to provide him with plenty of space to run, jump, and play. Keep them cooped up all day in the house at your own risk. These dogs need to be paired with owners that love to do plenty of outdoor activities.
