All people have heard the terrible stories about people who got into emergencies. Sometimes it is impossible to withstand the natural disasters. However, in many cases a lot of things could be done in order to protect you homes from emergencies. Preparing your houses and your families to possible disasters could make a big difference when it comes to surviving a real emergency.

It most cases people depend on government and emergency services to come to their aid. Very often these services do a very good job and safe a lot of people. However, you need to understand that in a major disaster every person could not become the first one to be rescued. And helping all people will take some time. That is why each household should be able to survive on their own for the first hours or even days following the catastrophe. Most survivalists recommend people to become self efficient for at least three days following an emergency. 72 hours are usually enough to cope with most disasters and you should not survive on your own longer than that in the majority of situations.

The most difficult thing for people who are recovering from an emergency is to wait for emergency services to come and help them. People do not understand why it often takes so long. Sometimes organizational mistakes could be made that slows down the response. However, even if everything runs smoothly, emergency response could not be as fast as most people think. And there are quite understandable reasons for that.

In the first place the general situation should be evaluated. Emergency services never know what they are dealing with until the disaster is already happening. Figuring out how many houses need help and how many people are missing requires time. Emergency services need to understand how many roads are damaged or blocked. There are also many other questions that have to be answered before government actually knows what kind of help is required.

The second reason is that local emergency response services also suffer from the same disaster. They do not have electricity and they are not able to move along the damaged roads. All these factors slow down their ability to respond and to help you. Of course, they have large vehicles and other types of equipment, but still they are not able to act as fast as in usual conditions.

During an emergency first response agencies have to deal with a large number of requests at once. Hundreds and even thousands of people may be seeking their help. It is impossible to help all of them at once. Some priorities have to be set. And you need to understand that in most disasters you will not be able to get help immediately.
